Padstow May Day: Venture up the North Coast of Cornwall to the picturesque port of Padstow for the biggest day in this harbour town’s calendar. Padstow May Day, or ‘Obby ‘Oss day, is a colourful and cultural explosion on the town’s streets, as Padstonians from all over the world return to celebrate May Day.
The English National Surfing Championships, which runs until 2nd May, is one of the UK’s longest-running surfing competitions. Held at Watergate Bay, the championships sees the next generation of young surfers battle it out to knock established competitors off the top spot!
Helston Flora Day, sees this small town come alive on 7th May for this spring festival as people young and old dance in the streets in traditional costume. Thousands of people flock to the town each year to sample the festival atmosphere.
If you’re a lover of classic rock, then head over to nearby Perranporth from May 27th-29th for the Tunes in The Dunes festival, where you can be entertained by Status Quo. This beach festival will also see performances from Scouting for Girls and Tom Odell.
For short breaks in Cornwall this May or June a visit to the county’s showpiece event – the Royal Cornwall Show is a must. This is far more than just an agricultural show, here you can sample great food and drink, browse the hundreds of stalls and see great live entertainment. Keep a look out for the royal visitor too!
An increasingly popular event in Falmouth’s calendar is the International Sea Shanty Festival. This fantastic free festival of maritime music is a great way to soak up the atmosphere of Falmouth’s seafaring past.
If you’re looking to sample a slice of Cornish culture during your short break in the county then a visit to Redruth for Murdoch Day should be on your to-do list. This is Redruth’s annual celebration of its most famous citizen – inventor William Murdoch. The festival offers loads of events, including a children’s dance and art procession, all day music and a street market.
The only problem with a short break in Cornwall is squeezing it all in… you’ll simply have to come back again and see more of this great county!
