by Richard 17. August 2010 15:02

In 2008 Tehidy Holiday Park was voted Holiday Park of the Year by travel and lifestyle guide - Shires Magazine. This was only six months after we took over the site and was a wonderful acknowledgement of the hard work we had put in to ensure we offered quality holidays at a sensible price.

Camping in Cornwall for time travellers

by Richard 10. July 2010 19:46

Campers looking for an alternative look no further, particularly if your into time travel. Tehidy Holiday Park in Cornwall is about to go back to the time of the hobbits. We are building 2 Hobbit round houses on the outer field. At 6m across they are big enough for a whole family. They will look amazing with plastered straw bale walls and timber, sedum covered roofs. These hobbit houses will fit in beautifully to our landscaped grounds. The wood burning stove will be ideal for heating and cooking on, the hobbit houses will be snug and dry whatever the weather.  Free hot showers, laundry play area and games room are all available on site, so creature comforts and then practicalities of a holiday with children are catered for. The sandy beaches of Portreath, Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and Godrevy are between 5 and 10 minutes from site. Being in a sheltered, wooded valley set back from Portreath, approximately half way between St Ives and St Agnes gives us a truely enviable position to explore hidden coves or miles of sandy bays as well as the amazing Cornish countryside on the door step. Woodland walks from site, cycle trails including the family friendly coast to coast trail, surfing, gardens, whatever you're looking for - we are more than happy to help point you in the right direction so that you can relax and make the most of your holiday. Just bring your sleeping bags, cutlery and torches, then you're pretty well set up for a great time. You may not want to come back to the present.

Hobbit Houses - What a way to go Camping in Cornwall

by Richard 9. July 2010 13:23

Yes you read the title correctly, we are going to build some hobbit houses on the outer field. They will be lime plastered straw bale and timber built, with a growing sedum roof, which will be spactacular in flower. What a way to keep you dry and comfortable whatever the weather does. At 7 meters across they will be big enough  for up to 6 people and will have sleeping benches/ seating around the inner wall, with plenty of storage built in. The central support post will have a table around it. They will be lovely and warm with a built in wood burner/ stove for cooking on too, even iron pots and pans/ kettles will be provided. Lighting will be subtle, hidden in the eaves to uplight the timber roof structure. All you will need is a sleeping bag, cutlery, plates, cups and a torch and you are away. Doors and windows will lock for your security. Water, waste disposal, fire point, bins recycling are all within 25metres of the hobbit houses. Showers and dish washing room are in the main shower block only 50 metres away.

OK A question that is bound to be going through your head right now - Why hobbit houses?

The answer is simple -

  1. West Cornwall has (had) the highest density of iron age round houses/ settlements anywhere in EUROPE, so lets try a quirky take on it.
  2. They will be great looking, with extra comforts built in.
  3. They will be built out of locally sourced materials so they will blend in to the site beautifully.
  4. They will be amazing, everyone I've spoken to has been really excited about them, me too!!
  5. No need to worry about packing a wet tent, or leaking seams.
  6. Wood for the stoves will be sold at nominal cost and will be locally sourced - a truely carbon zero fuel/ heating supply.

We'll start construction, planners willing, in October 2010 and they should be fully ready for March 2011. As they progress we'll make sure that there is plenty of information in regard to them.

This is a test to see how they go, we do plan to build a few more to make a little village on the outer field if it goes as well as we expect it to. At which point we will also probably build in a fire pit at a safe location. Meanwhile BBQs are always welcome. As one guest said when we asked their opinion ' What a bonus to have this type of thing available on a holiday park in Cornwall. Any feedback or ideas would be very welcome. Please feel free to make a comment or emial us via our website.
