Did your ancestors emigrate from Cornwall?

by Richard 11. June 2011 09:15

Tehidy Holiday Park in Cornwall is minutes away from Redruth. Redruth was the mining capital of Cornwall. What happened to all the miners when mining in Cornwall collapsed? The simple answer is many relocated to the new mining territories around the world. As they say where you find mining you'll find a Cornishman. Many people are now trying to trace their family routes and discover that their family tree comes back to mining in Cornwall. So where did the family emigrate to? This is the difficult question they often get stuck on. The good news is Redruth has a Global Migration Programme that keeps records of mining migration. This useful facility is housed in Murdoch House, Cross Street, Redruth. This is on a side street, opposite the Regal Cinema on Fore Street, at the bottom of the main shopping area.

The Cornish Wildlife Trust - Places to Visit

by Richard 6. May 2011 09:02

The coastal and marine environment of Cornwall is recognised as being of International and Local importance for its incredible marine wildlife. All the VMCAs Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas are easy to access from Tehidy Holiday Park and make for a wonderful day out.

St Agnes

From St agnes to Pen-a-Grader and includes the offshore Bawden Rocks. The area is a mix of sandy beach and exposed rocky shore with rock pools. Seabirds including fulmars, guilemots, razorbills and puffins live and breed here. Bottlenose dolphins are frequent visitors and the Atlantic grey seals breed in the sea caves.

Polzeath

One of the largest inter-tidal areas in North Cornwall, including rock, sand and gravel zones. Polzeath creates an oasis of rock, sheltering marine wildlife, including the wierd and wonderful Cletic Sea Slug.

Helford

The Helford River, or Helford Estuary, is one of Cornwall's most beautiful marine inlets. It provides a hugh range of habitats in a relatively sheltered environment. Helford is a designated Bass nursery area.

Fowey

The Fowey Estuary is a varied area, including salt marshes near Lostwithiel, mud banks and steep wooded banks. It makes a prime breeding ground for wading birds, including Egrets and Herons. It is a designated Bass nursery area and is used by migrating slamon and sea trout.

Looe

Including the Looe estuary, shoreline, Ranney's and St George's Island this area is an important breeding site for seabird colonies including great black-backed gulls, cormorants and shags. The coastline teams with marine plant and animal life. The mudflats in the estuary also make for feeding grounds for resident waders and visiting migratory birds including redshank, whimbrel and curlew.
